Franz Liszt - Vallée d’Obermann
This is a score of Vallée d’Obermann by Franz Liszt, and is primarily based on the first edition, which was published in 1855. This score was edited and engraved by Dr. Dominic Florence, and is presented without fingering or other editorial additions to preserve the original intentions of the composer. The first edition in 1855 contained three literary exceprts on the first page that presumably inspired Liszt in composing this piece; these excerpts are reprinted here in this new edition.
Vallée d’Obermann is the sixth piece from the first year of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage. These pieces were inspired by his travels, and especially his connection with nature. Vallée d’Obermann explores themes of isolation, doubt, and expression. At times meditative, at times raging with fire, and concluding with an exceptionally powerful ending, this piece requires a pianist to make his or her own difficult journey. This composition is, without question, one of Liszt’s finest works.
